Salem police hit a West Salem woman with a Taser after she attacked and kicked an officer late Friday night.
Officers went to the home of Janice Welke, 45, at 11 p.m. Friday to investigate a report of intoxicated minors, Deputy Chief Lyle Gembala said. The home is in the 200 block of Senate Drive NW.
Officer Raul Ramirez found Welke's 20-year-old daughter passed out in her room. When he shined a flashlight into the young woman's eyes to check on her welfare, her mother struck his hand in an attempt to knock away the flashlight, Gembala said.
Ramirez began to take Welke into custody, but she started fighting him, kicking him four times. Ramirez suffered a slight injury to his left hand. Officers subdued Welke after hitting her with the Taser several times, Gembala said. She appeared to be intoxicated.
Welke was taken to the Polk County Jail on accusations of harassment, interfering with a police officer, resisting arrest and attempted assault on a police officer.
